Chocolate ALWAYS leads to trouble!

So last week the boys were asking for oreos.  Me, being who I am, didn’t feel like going to the store to pay for overpriced cookies so I decided to quickly whip up a batch of ‘oreos’ for them.  I was searching for recipes and most of them had a devil’s food cake base.  I don’t buy boxed cake mixes so I had to keep searching.  Aha!  I finally found one that didn’t use a box cake mix!  So the boys and I made up the dough.  We were supposed to roll it out but decided that scooping it, rolling it, and then flattening it would be much more fun.  Well, I think we flattened them a little too much.  They turned out pretty bad.  So bad that my chocolate loving kiddos weren’t even begging for the cookies on the counter!

So I was left feeling guilty and like my kiddos didn’t get their chocoalte fix.  This morning we had a little extra time since our morning lessons aren’t as intense now that it’s summer.  So I decided to fit in a sneaky lesson.

“Who wants a brownie sundae after lunch today?”

So the older boys and I made up some brownies (one of their favorite things to help make AND eat).  I snuck in a bit of reading by making them read the instructions to me and setting the oven.  Then I decided that a true brownie sundae needs some good, thick hot fudge.  I made a small batch so we wouldn’t be tempted with delicious leftovers.

Hot Fudge

1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon flour
2 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons cocoa powder
1/2 cup milk
1 tablespoon butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Combine sugar, flour, and cocoa powder in small bowl.  Combine milk, butter, and vanilla in small saucepan over medium heat.  Once butter melts whisk in dry mixture and bring to boil over medium heat.  Continue whisking for 5 minutes until thick and smooth.

Wow!  Was it amazing!  Needless to say we ended up eating hot fudge brownie sundaes at 10:30 a.m. and now I know that lunch won’t get eaten.  We usually have a firm rule that desserts are desserts and healthy food gets eaten first.  But I just didn’t want to put that fudge in the fridge…what if it’s not as good reheated?  See…chocolate always leads to trouble!

Time!

Wow, does time fly!

I’ve thought about posting probably one hundred times since my last post but I just haven’t had the time to sit down and do it.  I keep wanting to post my recipe for homemade garlic knots but feel that it warrants a picture.  Perhaps I’ll post the recipe and update with a picture next time I make them.  Just felt like I should write something on here but I haven’t much time to write more.  Soon to come a garlic knot recipe…I promise!
